After the commencement of the scheme on 1 July 2020, an important part of assessing the suitability of disability workers who apply for registration is ensuring the individual is safe to practise, and is a fit and proper person to hold registration.
What we check
We will check the criminal history of all applicants for registration before deciding whether they are both a 'fit and proper person' to be registered, and are competent to practise as a disability worker in a safe manner.
We may also check the veracity of statements made by registered disability workers when applying for registration and seek further information to clarify the validity of documents.
We may also need to do a criminal and professional history check of unregistered workers when considering whether to prohibit a person from providing disability services.
We have the power to obtain a criminal history report from authorities within and outside Australia.
